In the middle of a busy day, a few minutes spent on your face can become a real pause, a moment to take care of yourself again. One of the recipes you will often come across is the turmeric and honey face mask, sometimes made with plain yogurt and cornstarch for a creamy texture that spreads easily.
But what do these ingredients actually do? And does “cosmetic” turmeric really leave no colour on the skin?
At a glance
- IngredientsTurmeric and honey, sometimes plain yogurt and cornstarch
- What it givesA moment of care and a softer feel, with no promise of treatment
- Watch out forTurmeric powder can leave a yellow tint and may cause an allergy in some people
- Before you startTry a small amount on a small area first
Turmeric: a promising ingredient, without the exaggerated promises
Turmeric contains compounds, curcumin above all, that have been studied for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research points to possible benefits in some skin uses, such as breakouts, but results vary with the formula, the concentration and how it is used.
So a homemade mask cannot be considered a proven treatment for acne, dark spots or wrinkles, and it does not promise instant results. Used regularly, though, it may bring you closer to the result you are hoping for.

Does cosmetic turmeric stain the skin?
The words “cosmetic turmeric” do not necessarily mean it will not leave a yellow tint. There is a difference between turmeric powder, its extracts and the derivatives made specifically for cosmetic products.
One of these derivatives is tetrahydrocurcumin, a white to cream-coloured derivative of curcumin used in some cosmetic formulas. It is not the same as the familiar yellow turmeric powder.
Before you buy: check the ingredient name, its composition and its instructions, and ask the supplier whether it can stain the skin. Concentrated cosmetic actives are used at their set dosage, not measured by the spoonful like food ingredients.
What do honey, yogurt and cornstarch do?

Honey
Honey helps hold on to water and may leave the skin feeling softer. But studies on medical-grade honey or formulated products do not automatically prove that a homemade recipe with food honey works the same way.
Plain yogurt
Yogurt gives the mix a creamy texture and contains lactic acid, which is good for the skin, but it is not the same as a cosmetic product with a controlled concentration.
Cornstarch
Cornstarch thickens the texture and makes the mask easier to spread. It should not be presented as a treatment for dark spots or a proven way to firm the skin.
Putting these ingredients together does not mean the mask suits every skin type: tolerance varies from person to person.
Simple steps to respect your skin
- Prepare a small amount with clean hands and tools, use it straight away, then throw away what is left, especially if it contains yogurt.
- Try a small amount on a small area first, keeping in mind that this does not rule out a reaction later.
- Avoid any ingredient you are sensitive to, and keep the mix away from your eyes, lips and broken skin.
Caution: if you feel burning or itching or see redness, wash your face and stop using it. Turmeric and its derivatives can cause contact allergy in some people.
After the mask… choose the right care

Rinse your face with lukewarm water, pat it dry with a clean towel, then apply a moisturiser that suits your skin. Avoid scrubbing hard to remove any colour: gentle cleansing helps prevent irritation.
We recommend RENOVA cream, made with ingredients that are good for the skin, such as argan oil, to help hydrate and nourish it deeply. As it contains retinol and is used in the evening, follow its instructions and check that it can be combined with the mask, especially if you notice dryness or irritation.
At ICOLAN, we believe skincare starts with understanding what your skin needs, choosing what suits it, and giving ourselves the moment of care we deserve.

Frequently asked questions
Does a turmeric mask leave a yellow tint on the skin?
Regular turmeric powder can leave a temporary yellow tint. Rinse with lukewarm water and avoid scrubbing. And “cosmetic turmeric” does not always mean it will not stain, so check the ingredient name before you buy.
Does a turmeric mask treat acne or dark spots?
A homemade mask is not a proven treatment for acne, dark spots or wrinkles. For a problem that persists, see a dermatologist.
Can I keep the mix for later?
No. Prepare a small amount, use it straight away and throw away what is left, especially if it contains yogurt.
Can I use it with RENOVA cream?
RENOVA contains retinol and is used in the evening. Follow its instructions and, if you notice dryness or irritation, do not use it on the same night as the mask.
